Where are they now:: Zachary Arneson

When the Melbourne Aces landed the signature of New York Yankees prospect Zachary Arneson, there were high hopes that Arneson could help lead the Aces to the Claxton Shield as part of a bolstered bullpen.

Originally drafted by the San Francisco Giants – selected 21st overall in 2010 – Arneson turned down that opportunity with the Giants and now sits within the Yankees organisation, with an eye on a major league bullpen down the track.

Following his stint with the Aces in the Australian Baseball League, I was able catch up with the promising pitcher to discuss his time in Australia and what his future holds.

1) Did you know much about Australian baseball before you came over?

I actually knew nothing at all about the league, I didn’t know they played baseball in Australia.

2) What were your impressions when you arrived? How much did that change from when you left?

My first impressions of Australia was that it was different being on the opposite side of the road. My impressions did not change just seeing how everyone was so laid back like California. It reminded me a lot of California.

3) The Melbourne Aces are regarded as one of the big market clubs, as an import, was there more added pressure to perform?

There was no pressure to perform because I was confident in what I brought to the table.

4) Melbourne’s season was a failure considering the expectations. Where did it go wrong?

I think it was just one of those years where we struggled a bit. The hitting and pitching but the talent on the team was evident.

5) Would you like to return to the ABL in the future?

I would definitely consider returning in the future.

6) If you could pick one Melbourne Aces teammate, who would project could make an impact in the big leagues?

I would say John Hussey, he throws all his pitches for strikes and they are all above average.

7) Were you surprised with the Australian baseball talent?

I was a little surprised at first , the talent in that league is very good and only going to get better in the future.

8) Phil Dale is the Melbourne Aces coach. What was it like working under an Australia baseball icon?

Phil was great, he offered me some great pitching advice and handles his team very professionally.

9) You are now playing with the Tampa Yankees. How is the season and your form progressing?

My first half of the year hasn’t gone well but I have no doubt that I can finish strong in the second half.

10) Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

I see myself in a major league bullpen.

11) Have you got a message for the Melbourne Aces fans?

They are the best fans in that league without a doubt , very supportive and loyal and I enjoyed getting to pitch in front of them. Shout out to “The Hangar”

12) Thank you for your time, myself and Hewitt Sports wish you all the best.

Cheers I appreciate it.
